“SMALL-t” AND “BIG-T” TRAUMA
Normally, when we think of trauma, we envision events that can cause us to fear for our lives such as car accidents, natural disasters, combat, and sexual or physical abuse. These are sometimes referred to as “big T” traumas which are easily identified. But there are other traumas that can easily be overlooked and untreated. We call these “small t” traumas. These can be minimized by those affected because they may be unaware that the experience is still impacting them “Small t” traumas can still range from bullying to divorce, and might even include things like emotional abuse, other grief, and even major life changes such as losing a job. Either type of trauma can lead to anxiety, depression, anger issues, loss of sleep, and many other negative impacts.
MANIFESTATION OF TRAUMA
When trauma is not treated, it can negatively affect many areas of our lives. While one of the “Big T” traumas is most frequently associated with the development of significant symptoms of PTSD, both types can have these effects. PTSD often causes the sufferer to experience symptoms of distress that can sometimes feel overwhelming. Flashbacks of the actual traumatic event are not uncommon, and these flashbacks bring the event back into the present. For this reason, trauma can create a cycle that causes self-destructive or reckless behaviors. Trauma sufferers often turn to drugs and alcohol to attempt to relieve these symptoms.
NEGATIVE IMPACTS
Not all who experience trauma will develop PTSD. However, everyone can experience trauma symptoms. The “Small t” traumas often will continue to impact our lives negatively, sometimes getting worse as the impacts accumulate. Impacts can include feelings of depression and anxiety that are seemingly impossible to eliminate from our lives. Often stress is another impact. These impacts can result in loss of self esteem and confidence. Trauma symptoms can also result from difficult life experiences that can cause us to doubt our own ability to ability to heal. For example, thoughts that, “I’m not good enough” or “I’m a failure” can become common. These thoughts are harmful because they limit one’s ability to access their inner resilience and resources so that they can move toward healing. This is when professional help may be necessary.
TRAUMA THERAPY
Morgan Center uses a variety of treatments for those who have experienced trauma. One of those treatments that has yielded some of the best results is called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Another treatment modality we use is called Heart-Centered Hypnotherapy. These treatments, along with traditional talk therapy are typically a powerful approach to achieving deep healing in the shortest period of time. It is important to note that every client is different and has experienced trauma differently. So, the time to healing varies. But the goal of treatment is to provide the client with a meaningful positive change in the shortest time possible. The ultimate goal of treatment is to allow the client to live a happier life and to relieve the feelings of suffering.
EMDR treatment is used by specially trained EMDR therapists worldwide. It was designed to help process experiences that are frozen in time and causing thus continuing to cause suffering. EMDR works by helping the client process these memories so that adaptive emotions are moved to the neural network.
Heart-Centered Hypnotherapy is different from EMDR. It allows the client to break barriers to accessing their inner resources and address root of their issue. Guided clinical hypnotherapy sessions lead the client to a more relaxed state where they can then work more effectively with the therapist to resolve trauma and its symptoms.
