“Small-t” AND “BIG-T” Trauma

Normally, when we think of trauma, we envision events that can cause us to fear for our lives such as car accidents, natural disasters, combat, and sexual or physical abuse. These are sometimes referred to as “big T” traumas which are easily identified. But there are other traumas that can easily be overlooked and untreated. We call these “small t” traumas.

Small-t traumas can be minimized by those affected because they may be unaware that the experience is still impacting them “Small t” traumas can still range from bullying to divorce, and might even include things like emotional abuse, other grief, and even major life changes such as losing a job. While one of the “Big T” traumas is most frequently associated with the development of significant symptoms of PTSD,  both types can have these effects.
