“SMALL” AND “BIG” TRAUMA
Normally, when we think of trauma, we envision life-threatening events such as car accidents, natural disasters, combat, and sexual or physical abuse. These are sometimes referred to as “big T” traumas which are easily identified. Other events that are indicated as “small t” traumas are often overlooked or minimized and those harmed are sometimes unaware of how that experience is affecting them. These “small t” traumas are often highly distressing events such as bullying, infidelity, divorce, emotional abuse, complicated grief, sudden life changes, etc. Both can end in lasting anxiety, insomnia, depression, anger, disconnection, and other negative feelings.
HOW TRAUMA MANIFESTS
Left untreated, trauma can negatively impact most aspects of life. “Big T” traumas are those most often acknowledged with the development of PTSD symptoms. People with PTSD experience distressing and overwhelming symptoms that include flashbacks of the event that make the past a current experience. Trauma sufferers may partake in self-destructive or reckless behaviors, such as addiction, in their attempt to cope.
ANXIETY, DEPRESSION, AND LOW SELF-ESTEEM
Not everyone develops PTSD, but everyone can experience trauma symptoms. “Small t” traumas typically have a cumulative effect. We may experience a lingering feeling of depression that we cannot break out of, increased anxiety and stress, a negative view of self and a feeling of being stuck. These symptoms often have roots in adverse life experiences and create core beliefs that hinder our ability to heal. Examples of these core beliefs are “I’m not good enough”, “I’m weak”, “I am powerless”, “I’m a failure”, “I am inadequate”, and many others. These beliefs harm our ability to connect with our own resilience and inner resources that provide a path to healing.
TREATING TRAUMA
While I use several modes of treating trauma, I have found that both Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Heart Centered Hypnotherapy provide the possibility for deep healing with a relatively small number of sessions. Though everyone is different, both approaches allow for the client to overcome the devastating effects of trauma and have a positive shift in the way they see themselves.
EMDR is a specialized form of psychotherapy used to curtail negative feelings caused by memories connected to a traumatic event. First discovered in the late 1980’s, this method is now used by specially trained EMDR therapists around the world. The guiding principle behind its applications is that problems arise when an experience is not properly processed and becomes frozen in time leading to maladaptive responses. Positive change happens when these memories are processed and adaptive emotions are moved to the neural network.
Heart-Centered Hypnotherapy allows the client to break into their own inner guidance and go to the root of the issue. A guided session leads the client to a more relaxed place where they can resolve trauma and relieve symptoms.
