When you’re looking for help with trauma, the letters after a therapist’s name can be hard to make sense of. If you’ve seen “CCTP” next to my name and wondered what it means, this page is here to explain it, and why it matters when you’re choosing someone to help you heal.
What Is a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional?
A Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, or CCTP, is a licensed mental health clinician who has completed specialized training in the assessment and treatment of trauma. It’s a credential that goes beyond a general therapy license. It reflects focused study in how trauma affects the brain and body, the ways it shows up in people’s lives, and the evidence-based approaches that actually help people recover.
I earned my CCTP certification through the International Association of Trauma Professionals (IATP), and I maintain it through Evergreen Certifications, which now oversees the credential. Keeping it current means staying up to date with the evolving understanding of trauma and the best ways to treat it, rather than relying on what was known when I first trained.
Why Specialized Trauma Training Matters
Trauma isn’t like other struggles, and treating it well takes more than good intentions. Trauma lives in the nervous system as much as in our thoughts, which is why someone can understand intellectually that they’re safe and still feel the alarm going off in their body. Approaches that work for everyday stress or worry don’t always reach that deeper layer, and handled without care, trauma work can sometimes overwhelm rather than help.
That’s the value of specialized training. It means I understand how to pace this work, how to keep you feeling safe while we do it, and how to recognize when something is trauma rather than something else. It’s the difference between a therapist who is willing to talk about your trauma and one who is specifically trained to treat it.
How I Work With Trauma
My approach is trauma-informed from the first session, which simply means I understand that what happened to you was real, that your responses to it make sense, and that healing happens in an environment of safety and trust rather than pressure. I meet people where they are and move at their pace. I won’t push you to revisit anything before you’re ready.
Much of my trauma work draws on EMDR, one of the most thoroughly researched treatments for trauma and PTSD, which can help the nervous system process experiences that have felt stuck. Depending on what fits, I also bring in cognitive approaches and, for some clients, clinical hypnotherapy. If you’d like to read more about the specific work I do, you can explore my pages on PTSD treatment, trauma and grief counseling, and trauma therapy.
Could Trauma Work Help You?
Trauma takes many forms, and it doesn’t always announce itself. People often come to me carrying the effects of physical or emotional abuse, sexual assault, a sudden or difficult loss, or another life-altering experience. You may recognize some of these in yourself: lasting anxiety or depression, memories or nightmares that intrude when you don’t want them, feeling emotionally cut off from the people you love, or finding yourself reaching for substances to quiet painful feelings. None of these mean something is wrong with you. They’re the ways the mind and body try to cope with more than they were meant to carry, and they can ease with the right support.
