EMDR BRIEFLY EXPLAINED?
EMDR is an information-processing therapy that consists of multiple elements including: assessment of coping skills and client stability, identification of a target or current situation which evokes traumatic memory, utilization of stress reduction tools, patient history, and ultimately, the use of these techniques to lessen the potency of the sensations that are associated with a traumatic experience so that the patient can escalate positive experiences that are essential to better mental health, vitality, and better relationships with others. Once the processing of a certain memory is completed with EMDR Therapy, the result of the therapy is that a specific memory will no longer have the same force or emotional charge. With EMDR treatment, patients can remember the memory, but it often ceases to cause the same reactions and traumatic feelings.
WHAT OCCURS DURING AN EMDR THERAPY SESSION?
While in an EMDR Therapy session, the therapist will ask you a handful of questions related to the traumatic memory and the negative feelings you have about it. Once the EMDR processing begins the therapist will utilize a bilateral stimulation which may involve following the therapist’s fingers with your eyes as they move left to right, holding onto buzzers that alternate vibrations between your hands, wearing headphones with tones that alternate left and right, or following a moving light. Many times EMDR therapy combines quite a few of these factors. These are typical examples of bilateral stimulation that will help your brain with processing the trauma. Your therapist will support and guide you as you begin processing your traumatic memories with the goal of decreasing distressing feelings about a specific memory.
WHAT ARE THE KINDS OF MEMORIES EMDR THERAPY CAN HELP?
EMDR Therapy is extremely helpful for a variety of painful emotional experiences. Some examples of these experiences are listed below:
- Memories of being shamed or criticized
- Betrayal by a loved one
- Growing up with a parent who could easily become angry
- Growing with an emotionally unavailable parent
- Growing up with a parent who drank too much
- Memories of being spanked hit or otherwise physically injured
- Memories of being sexually abused or assaulted
- Times you thought you might die
- Losing someone you love
- Memories of parents divorcing, and/or going through your own divorce or end of a relationship
HOW IS EMDR THERAPY DIFFERENT FROM TALK THERAPY
EMDR Therapy is a structured therapeutic modality. As part of the EMDR therapy, you will observe with the therapist as they guide the process and then you tell the therapist what comes up when you think about particular aspects of a certain memory.
EMDR Therapy can often deliver results that have positive impacts even sooner and at a deeper level than conventional talk therapy. Also, when EMDR is used together with talk therapy it is oftentimes even more effective.
HOW LONG DOES EMDR THERAPY TAKE?
There are a preparation and assessment phase for EMDR Therapy during which your therapist evaluates the process to determine whether EMDR Therapy is the proper treatment for you. Once the processing begins, some negative memories can be processed and resolved quickly. While the more difficult traumas may require a longer time period. After the initial assessment and first processing session, a clearer picture will begin to develop for how long it might take to work through your negative or traumatic memories.
